What Are Category-Based Draws?

In 2023, IRCC introduced category-based selection to Express Entry. Candidates in targeted categories receive ITAs at CRS cutoffs 20–60 points lower than all-program draws. Use IMMERGITY's Eligibility Assessment to check whether your profile qualifies for any category draws.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the active Express Entry categories in 2026?

As of February 2026, there are 10 active categories: Healthcare and Social Services, STEM, Trades, Transport, French-Language Proficiency, Education, Physicians with Canadian work experience, Senior Managers with Canadian work experience, Researchers with Canadian work experience, and Skilled Military Recruits. The Agriculture and agri-food category was retired in February 2026. Check your category eligibility at the Eligibility Assessment.

What CRS score do I need for a category draw?

Category draws consistently clear at lower CRS scores than all-program draws. French-language draws have cleared as low as CRS 336. Healthcare and STEM draws typically clear between 430–480. Transport draws have cleared as low as 388. Your exact cutoff risk depends on your specific category and the pool at draw time.

What is the minimum work experience for Express Entry categories in 2026?

As of February 2026, the minimum is 12 months of non-continuous work experience in a qualifying occupation within the past 3 years. This increased from 6 months previously. Experience can be accumulated across multiple employers and does not need to be consecutive.

Do I need Canadian work experience for category draws?

Not for most categories. Healthcare, STEM, Education, Trades, Transport, and French-Language Proficiency all accept foreign work experience. The Physicians, Senior Managers, and Researchers categories specifically require Canadian work experience. Skilled Military Recruits requires a Canadian Armed Forces job offer.

Can I qualify for more than one Express Entry category?

Yes. If your NOC code appears in multiple eligible category lists and you meet the work experience requirement for each, you may receive ITAs in draws for any of those categories. This can significantly increase your chances of receiving an ITA at a lower CRS score.

What NOC codes qualify for the French language category?

The French-language proficiency category has no specific NOC requirement — it is based purely on language ability. You need NCLC 7+ in all four French abilities and CLB 5+ English. Candidates who qualify for this category also earn a 25–50 point French language bonus on their CRS score. Use the CLB Converter to check your language scores.
