IMMERGITY CLB Converter — IELTS CELPIP to Canadian Language Benchmark

What Is the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB)?

The Canadian Language Benchmark is the national standard for describing and measuring English language ability in Canada. CLB levels run from 1 (beginner) to 12 (advanced native-equivalent). IRCC uses CLB levels — not raw test scores — to assess language proficiency for all immigration programs.

Every official language test accepted by IRCC maps to CLB levels using conversion tables published by the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks (CCLB). The IMMERGITY CLB converter applies those official tables directly.

Accepted Language Tests for Express Entry — Canada 2026

IRCC accepts five designated language tests for English and French proficiency. As of 2026, PTE Core (not PTE Academic) is the accepted Pearson test for Canadian immigration. TEF Canada and TCF Canada are the two accepted French tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert my IELTS score to CLB for Express Entry?

Enter your IELTS General Training band scores for Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking into the IMMERGITY CLB converter. Each ability is converted separately using the official CCLB table. An 8.5–9.0 maps to CLB 10–12; a 7.5 maps to CLB 9; a 6.0 maps to CLB 7.

What CLB level do I need for Express Entry?

FSW requires CLB 7 minimum in all four abilities. CEC requires CLB 7 for TEER 0/1 occupations or CLB 5 for TEER 2/3. Higher CLB levels earn more CRS points — CLB 10+ maximizes your language score contribution to 32 points per ability.

Is CELPIP or IELTS better for Express Entry?

Both are accepted and earn identical CRS points at equivalent CLB levels. CELPIP results arrive faster (4–8 days vs. 13 days for paper IELTS) and the test is 100% computer-based, which many test-takers find easier for the writing component. IELTS is more widely recognized globally if you need your scores for other purposes.

What does CLB 9 mean for Express Entry CRS points?

CLB 9 in all four abilities of your first official language earns 124 CRS points for a single applicant (31 pts × 4 abilities). Upgrading to CLB 10 earns 128 points (32 pts × 4 abilities) — a net gain of 4 points. However, if your CLB 9 is only in two or three abilities, upgrading those to CLB 9 adds significantly more.

Does French count for Express Entry language points?

Yes, and strategically. TEF Canada or TCF Canada results at CLB 7+ in all four abilities add 25 bonus CRS points on top of your English score. CLB 9+ in French adds 50 bonus points. French proficiency also makes you eligible for French-language draws, which have historically had lower CRS cutoffs (379–430 vs. 479–524 for all-program draws).

How long are language test results valid for Express Entry?

Language test results are valid for two years from the test date. If your results expire while you are in the pool, you must retest and update your profile. Expired test results render your profile invalid for draws until updated.
